Body Weight and Fat Changes After Weight-Loss Surgery or GLP-1 Medicine Treatment

Updated

Abstract

Bariatric surgery resulted in a 42.4% reduction in fat mass at 6 months compared to 10.3% in patients treated with GLP-1 receptor agonists.

  • Bariatric surgery participants experienced a steady fat mass reduction of 49.7% at both 12 and 24 months.
  • GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment led to a maximum fat mass reduction of 18.0% at 24 months.
  • Fat-free mass reductions were 11.7% in the surgery group at 24 months, compared to 3.3% in the GLP-1RA group.
  • The fat-free mass to fat mass ratio improved significantly in both groups, with surgical patients maintaining a higher ratio throughout the study.
  • Men exhibited better preservation of fat-free mass compared to women, particularly in the GLP-1RA treatment group.
