How Sleep and Body Clocks May Relate to Behavior Problems in Children with Smith-Magenis Syndrome

Abstract

Among 20 children with Smith-Magenis syndrome, 70% experienced pathological sleep disturbances.

  • Subjective sleep assessments indicated that 50% of children reported insomnia and 40% experienced excessive daytime sleepiness.
  • Objective sleep measurements revealed that 71% had reduced total sleep time and 88% had reduced sleep efficiency.
  • A positive correlation was identified between sleep disorders and stereotyped behaviors, along with insomnia and irritability.
  • Stronger morning chronotypes were associated with lower irritability, while earlier circadian rhythm onsets correlated with increased social withdrawal and hyperactivity.
  • Both subjective sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm characteristics were associated with social withdrawal.
