Sleep and daily rhythm differences in people with delayed sleep-wake phase disorder compared to healthy individuals
Updated
Abstract
People with delayed sleep-wake phase disorder (DSWPD) exhibited significantly more variable wake times and total sleep time compared to healthy controls (p ≤ 0.015).
- Intraindividual variability in sleep onset time and sleep efficiency was similar between DSWPD and healthy controls (p ≥ 0.30).
- The dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) was relatively stable during the study break, with 27% of DSWPD participants showing shifts of more than one hour compared to 11% of controls.
- In DSWPD patients, greater sleep variability was associated with a larger shift in the DLMO (r = 0.46, p = 0.03).
- Higher variability in sleep among DSWPD patients may influence their DLMO variability, potentially affecting their sleep symptoms and treatment timing.
