Sleep problems and their links to health and safety in police officers

Abstract

Of the 4957 police officers surveyed, 40.4% screened positive for at least one sleep disorder, many of whom were undiagnosed.

  • 33.6% of participants screened positive for obstructive sleep apnea, 6.5% for moderate to severe insomnia, and 5.4% for shift work disorder.
  • 28.5% of those who completed the sleepiness scale reported excessive sleepiness.
  • 26.1% reported falling asleep while driving at least once a month.
  • Officers with sleep disorders showed higher rates of physical and mental health issues, including diabetes, depression, and cardiovascular disease.
  • Follow-up surveys indicated that officers with sleep disorders were more likely to report serious administrative errors and fatigue-related safety violations.
