Sleep problems in people with Parkinson's disease

Updated

Abstract

Sleep problems are present in 42% of Parkinson's disease patients compared to 12% of age-matched healthy controls.

  • Insomnia and nightmares each affect 32% of Parkinson's disease patients, while excessive daytime sleepiness affects 15%.
  • The presence of nightmares is associated with a higher Hoehn and Yahr score and increased levodopa dosage.
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness correlates with higher Hoehn and Yahr stage and levodopa dose.
  • Sleep latency is longer in Parkinson's disease patients than in healthy controls.
  • Multiple logistic regression analysis indicates that sleep disturbances correlate with disease severity measures.
