Sleep quality linked to mood, daily functioning, and life satisfaction in people starting treatment for bipolar disorder

Updated

Abstract

Of 2024 bipolar patients, 32% were classified as short sleepers.

  • Short sleepers exhibited greater mood elevation and an earlier age at onset of bipolar disorder.
  • Short sleepers had a longer illness duration compared to normal and long sleepers.
  • Both short and long sleepers reported greater depressive symptoms and poorer life functioning.
  • Patients with short and long sleep durations experienced lower quality of life than those with normal sleep duration.
  • Sleep disturbance may serve as a trait marker of bipolar disorder, suggesting further investigation is needed.
