Sleep diaries of young adults with chosen bedtimes predict the start of melatonin release in dim light

Updated

Abstract

The mean dim light melatonin onset (DLMO) was 22:48 ± 01:30 h in young adults with variable sleep schedules.

  • Sleep onset and wake time averaged over the last 5 days were 01:44 ± 01:41 h and 08:44 ± 01:26 h, respectively.
  • The DLMO was significantly correlated with sleep onset, midpoint, and wake time, with the strongest correlation observed with the mean midpoint of sleep from the last 5 days (r = 0.89).
  • The predicted DLMO based on the mean midpoint of sleep was within 1 hour of the measured DLMO for 92% of participants, with no differences exceeding 1.5 hours.
  • A significant but weak correlation was found between the DLMO and scores on the morningness-eveningness questionnaire (r = -0.48).
  • Circadian phase can be accurately predicted using sleep log data from normal, healthy day-active young adults, even with irregular sleep patterns.
