Amount and quality of sleep in top young soccer players

Abstract

Early evening high-intensity training resulted in a 7:45 ± 1:09 h wake time, significantly later than the home condition at 06:44 ± 0:41 h.

  • Training nights were associated with higher ratings of sleepiness at bedtime compared to home nights.
  • There were no significant differences in sleep quality or quantity between the training and home conditions.
  • Cold water immersion did not appear to affect sleep quality or quantity after training.
  • Overall, participants averaged about 7:30 hours of sleep with an efficiency of approximately 89%.
