Smartphone Programs to Decrease Sitting Time and Increase Physical Activity Using Combined Behavior Models: Systematic Review

Updated

Abstract

Out of 1087 screened publications, only 11 describe 8 studies that utilized dynamic models in smartphone-based interventions for physical activity.

  • All included studies primarily targeted physical activity (PA), with four also addressing sedentary behavior (SB).
  • The predominant psychological theory used in these studies was social cognitive theory.
  • Dynamic models employed included behavioral intervention technology, control systems, and decision networks.
  • Effectiveness was observed in quasi-experimental studies with reduced SB and increased light PA, while randomized controlled trials showed increased walking steps.
  • Five studies measured activity using built-in smartphone sensors, with three incorporating GPS and three using wearable trackers.
  • The review highlights a notable scarcity of dynamic model-based smartphone studies aimed at reducing SB or promoting PA.
