Smell and Taste Problems in People Using Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist Medicines

Abstract

Patients using GLP-1 receptor agonists have a 48% increased risk of experiencing smell and taste disturbances.

  • The study involved 438,474 patients in both the GLP-1 RA group and the control group.
  • Patients treated with GLP-1 RAs showed a hazard ratio of 1.48 for overall smell and taste disturbances compared to controls.
  • The risk of smell disturbances was particularly high, with a hazard ratio of 1.81.
  • Taste disturbances were also more common among GLP-1 RA users, with a hazard ratio of 1.52.
  • These associations were consistent over a follow-up period ranging from 3 months to 2 years.
