Links Between Social Isolation, Loneliness, and New Cases of Heart Failure in a Large Population Study

Updated

Abstract

Among 464,773 participants, 12,898 incident heart failure cases were documented during a median follow-up of 12.3 years.

  • Social isolation is associated with a 17% increased risk of incident heart failure.
  • Loneliness is associated with a 19% increased risk of incident heart failure.
  • The risk associated with social isolation is modified by loneliness status.
  • A significant association between social isolation and heart failure risk was observed only in individuals without loneliness.
  • The findings indicate that both social isolation and loneliness are independent risk factors for heart failure, regardless of genetic predisposition.
