Social isolation and loneliness linked to the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, depending on blood sugar levels

Updated

Abstract

During a median follow-up of 12.5 years, 13,213 (3.7%) cases of incident type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) were documented.

  • Social isolation and loneliness were associated with an increased risk of T2DM in individuals without prediabetes.
  • In those with prediabetes, the link between social isolation and T2DM was weaker and influenced by factors such as alcohol consumption and household income.
  • Loneliness showed a similar pattern, with its association with T2DM also being mediated by body mass index and healthy sleep.
  • The associations of social isolation and loneliness with T2DM were significantly different between those with normoglycemia and those with prediabetes.
