Social isolation and loneliness linked to new cases of type 2 diabetes: evidence from large studies in Europe and East Asia and genetic analysis

Updated

Abstract

15,072 cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) were documented in a cohort of 423,503 UK adults over a mean follow-up of 13.5 years.

  • Social isolation is associated with an increased risk of T2DM, with hazard ratios of 1.17 in the UK cohort and 1.22 in the Chinese cohort.
  • Loneliness also shows a significant association with T2DM risk, indicated by hazard ratios of 1.21 in both cohorts.
  • Feeling lonely and engaging in fewer leisure or social activities are linked to a higher risk of T2DM, according to two-sample Mendelian randomization analyses.
  • Increased contact with friends or family is associated with a lower risk of developing T2DM.
