Social isolation and loneliness linked to new cases of type 2 diabetes

Updated

Abstract

Loneliness is linked to a 44% higher risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM).

  • Loneliness is associated with a significant increase in T2DM incidence (OR: 1.44; 95% CI: 1.19-1.73; P: 0.0001).
  • Social isolation also shows a significant association with T2DM (OR: 1.88; 95% CI: 1.38-2.58; P:<0.0001).
  • High variability in results (heterogeneity) was noted for both loneliness (I² = 95%) and social isolation (I² = 98%).
  • Differences in how loneliness is measured could affect the findings.
  • Addressing social factors like isolation and loneliness may be important in managing T2DM.
  • More research with larger samples and consistent criteria is needed for better understanding.
