Sports Nutrition Knowledge and Advice Among High School Coaches

Abstract

Coaches in a study achieved a mean score of 68.4% on sports nutrition knowledge assessments.

  • Less than 30% of coaches answered general nutrition questions about carbohydrates and lipids correctly.
  • No significant differences in nutrition knowledge were found between coaches of 'leanness' and 'non-leanness' sports or between male and female coaches.
  • Coaches with a university education scored higher in nutrition knowledge compared to those without (73.3% vs. 63.3%).
  • Coaches with coaching certification also demonstrated better knowledge than those without certification.
  • The Internet was the primary source of nutrition information for 55% of coaches.
  • Hydration and protein-rich foods were the most commonly recommended practices to enhance athlete performance.
