Loss of SREBF1 disrupts fat signaling and leads to slow muscle fiber breakdown

Updated

Abstract

Loss of the SREBP1 gene in zebrafish led to disrupted slow-fiber organization and reduced muscle mass in adults.

  • Srebp1 knockout resulted in increased locomotion in larvae.
  • Altered fatty acid composition was observed in the knockout muscle.
  • Arachidonoylethanolamide (AEA) levels were reduced, while palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) levels were elevated.
  • Broad remodeling of polyunsaturated fatty acid-derived mediators occurred.
  • Differential expression of genes related to cardiolipin metabolism was noted.
  • The findings suggest SREBP1 plays a role in maintaining lipid balance and fiber type integrity, potentially influencing muscle degeneration.
