Severe acid imbalance linked to starvation after short-term use of oral semaglutide: A case report

Updated

Abstract

A previously healthy, nondiabetic young woman developed starvation-associated euglycemic ketoacidosis after 5 days of oral semaglutide use for weight reduction.

  • The patient experienced persistent nausea and vomiting alongside significantly reduced oral intake.
  • Arterial blood gas analysis indicated high-anion gap metabolic acidosis with normal serum glucose and lactate levels.
  • Urine studies revealed high sodium excretion and evidence of phosphate and magnesium wasting.
  • Following the discontinuation of semaglutide, the patient's acid-base status normalized within 3 days.
  • Electrolyte abnormalities required ongoing monitoring after treatment.
