Fatty Liver Disease and Liver Cancer: Causes and Possible Treatments

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Steatotic liver disease progression to cirrhosis and cancer depends on interacting metabolic, alcohol-related, immune, fibrotic, environmental, and genetic factors.

Evidence

This review synthesizes mechanisms and therapeutic targets for metabolic dysfunction-associated and alcohol-associated steatotic liver diseases, covering hepatocyte injury, inflammatory and fibrotic cell responses, environmental risks, genetic variants, late-stage cancer risk, and emerging treatments including thyroid hormone receptor beta agonists, GLP-1 receptor agonists, and FGF21 analogues.

Caveat

As a review motivated by a symposium, it summarizes current understanding and interventions rather than testing a single causal pathway or treatment outcome.
