Stress, sleep, and saliva markers in college students

Abstract

In a study of 637 undergraduates, 90.4% reported moderate-to-high perceived stress.

  • Perceived stress correlated with fatigue (r = 0.41, p < 0.01) and poor sleep quality (r = 0.35, p < 0.01).
  • Laboratory profiling of 33 participants revealed stress-dependent physiological patterns.
  • High stress was linked to increased sympathetic activation (higher levels of alpha-amylase).
  • Altered diurnal cortisol patterns indicated dysregulation of the HPA axis in high-stress individuals.
  • Circadian disruption was evidenced by elevated melatonin levels among those with high stress.
  • Increased levels of immune markers (IgA and lysozyme) suggested mucosal immune activation.
