How Common Mild PTSD Symptoms Are and Their Impact on Health in Frontline Healthcare Workers During COVID-19

Updated

Abstract

Among 852 healthcare workers, 55.3% exhibited subthreshold posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) during the COVID-19 pandemic's second wave.

  • Healthcare workers with subthreshold PTSS reported 88% more physical health symptoms compared to those with no PTSS.
  • Those with subthreshold PTSS also experienced 36% more sleep problems than their counterparts without PTSS.
  • Probable PTSD was identified in 5.5% of participants, indicating a smaller but significant group with higher health impairment.
  • The prevalence of subthreshold PTSS suggests a need for targeted mental health interventions for healthcare workers.
