Risk of Suicidal Thoughts, Depression, and Anxiety in Children and Teens Using GLP-1 Receptor Agonists

Updated

Abstract

Essence

GLP-1 receptor agonist use was linked to lower suicidal ideation or behavior and depression, but not lower anxiety, in children and adolescents with obesity or youth-onset type 2 diabetes.

Evidence

A retrospective target-trial emulation in OneFlorida+ EHR compared new GLP-1 receptor agonist users with prevalent metformin users across about 1,764 to 2,010 pediatric patients per outcome and up to 4 years of follow-up.

Caveat

The observational prevalent-new user design can reduce but not eliminate confounding, and anxiety showed no significant difference despite a higher point estimate.
