Better endurance performance from consuming several types of digestible carbohydrates
Updated
Abstract
Ingestion of glucose and fructose resulted in an 8% improvement in cycling time-trial performance compared to glucose alone.
- Eight trained male cyclists participated in the study.
- All subjects consumed either a glucose-only drink, a glucose and fructose drink, or a water placebo during exercise.
- The glucose and fructose drink provided carbohydrate at the same rate as the glucose-only drink but resulted in faster performance.
- Time to completion was 4022 seconds for the glucose and fructose drink, compared to 3641 seconds for the glucose-only drink.
- Carbohydrate oxidation rates were similar between glucose and fructose and glucose-only drinks, indicating potential sparing of the body's carbohydrate stores.
