Higher Levels of TCF21 Protein Reduce Spread and Invasion in Esophageal Squamous Cell Cancer

Abstract

TCF21 mRNA and protein expression were both downregulated in esophageal cancer tissues compared with adjacent normal tissues.

  • Low expression of TCF21 is closely correlated with N stage in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).
  • Kaplan-Meier survival analysis indicates that patients with lower TCF21 expression have poorer prognosis.
  • Overexpression of TCF21 significantly inhibits proliferation, migration, and invasion in esophageal cancer cell lines.
  • Upregulation of TCF21 is associated with increased expression of the tumor suppressor Kiss-1.
  • TCF21 may reverse epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) by modulating the expression of related proteins.
