Long-term benefits and risks of drugs that activate the GLP-1 receptor

Updated

Abstract

Forty-five trials involving 71,517 patients demonstrated that GLP1RAs reduce cardiovascular risk factors and complications compared to placebo.

  • GLP1RAs are associated with a reduction in microvascular complications, including renal events, with a relative risk of 0.85.
  • A reduction in macrovascular complications, including stroke, was observed with a relative risk of 0.86.
  • GLP1RAs are linked to a decrease in all-cause mortality, with a relative risk of 0.89 compared to placebo.
  • Compared to other anti-hyperglycemic medications, GLP1RAs only showed a reduction in cardiovascular risk factors.
  • Increased gastrointestinal events leading to treatment discontinuation were reported for both GLP1RAs and other anti-hyperglycemic medications.
