Thyroid hormone levels, thyroid antibodies, and pregnancy results

Abstract

Among 1,193 women with prior pregnancy losses, subclinical hypothyroidism and thyroid autoimmunity were not linked to increased risks of complications.

  • There was no association between prepregnancy thyroid-stimulating hormone levels and preterm delivery, gestational diabetes, or preeclampsia.
  • Adjusted relative risks for preterm delivery, gestational diabetes, and preeclampsia were 0.77, 1.28, and 1.20, respectively.
  • Women with thyroid antibodies did not show an increased likelihood of preterm delivery, gestational diabetes, or preeclampsia.
  • Relative risks for these conditions among women with thyroid antibodies were 1.26 for preterm delivery, 1.33 for gestational diabetes, and 1.02 for preeclampsia.
  • Findings suggest that low-risk asymptomatic women may not need routine screening for thyroid dysfunction or autoimmunity.
