Fluids and barriers of the CNS

Daily and age-related patterns of sugar and protein levels in spinal fluid

Updated

Abstract

Essence

glucose ratios varied by time of day, while CSF protein was mainly associated with age rather than collection time.

Evidence

This was a retrospective clinical laboratory analysis of CSF collections from 13 hospitals, including 8,210 CSF glucose and 10,103 CSF protein values after exclusions.

Caveat

Because samples came from patients undergoing clinical care, the observed time-of-day patterns may reflect clinical sampling context as well as circadian biology.
