Timing of bright light therapy and its effects on pleasure loss and body clock problems in depression

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Morning bright light therapy reduced anhedonia in depression and was associated with delayed melatonin peak phase.

Evidence

A single-blind placebo-controlled randomized trial in 81 depression patients compared morning or evening 10,000 lx bright light therapy with 100 lx placebo for 30 minutes daily over two weeks, measuring RPAS, HAMD, and salivary melatonin/cortisol.

Caveat

The anhedonia benefit was specific to morning bright light therapy versus morning placebo over two weeks, while melatonin links were correlational and the trial was single-blind.
