Tirzepatide and its effects on metabolism, kidney-heart health, and heart failure

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Tirzepatide is emerging as a cardiometabolic therapy with evidence for weight, glycemic, risk-factor, cardiorenal, and obesity-related benefits.

Evidence

This narrative review summarizes mechanistic rationale and clinical evidence from SURPASS, SURMOUNT, SURPASS-CVOT, SUMMIT, and exploratory cardiorenal and sleep apnea analyses.

Caveat

Its incremental benefit versus established GLP-1 receptor agonists, long-term routine-care effectiveness, and best positioning across heart failure phenotypes remain unresolved.

Simplified

Key numbers

2.07%
Reduction
Reduction achieved with tirzepatide 15 mg in SURPASS-1 trial.
22.5%
Weight Loss
Mean weight loss with 15 mg dose in SURMOUNT-1 trial.
12.2%
Cardiovascular Events
Compared to 13.1% for dulaglutide, indicating noninferiority.
