Tirzepatide maintains blood stem cell activity and changes inflammatory immune cells in obese mice

Updated

Abstract

Weight loss through caloric restriction leads to multilineage cytopenias, while tirzepatide preserves blood lineages and reduces specific monocyte types.

  • Obesity is associated with increased numbers of myeloid progenitors and monocytes.
  • Caloric restriction may cause suppression of hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells and lower cell cycle activity.
  • Tirzepatide treatment appears to preserve hematopoietic progenitor activity while selectively remodeling inflammatory monocytes.
  • Following weight regain after tirzepatide withdrawal, levels of certain monocytes rebound to those seen in obese mice.
  • Tirzepatide may alter the inflammatory response by affecting the maturation of classical monocytes.
