Tirzepatide’s effects on obstructive sleep apnea, heart and metabolism health, and what this means for heart care

Updated

Abstract

Tirzepatide reduced the apnea-hypopnea index by an estimated 20.0 and 23.8 events per hour relative to placebo in two trials.

  • Obstructive sleep apnea affects approximately one billion adults and is linked to serious health issues.
  • Obesity is the primary reversible cause of obstructive sleep apnea, affecting the airway's structure.
  • Weight loss may improve upper airway openness by reducing fat in the tongue and surrounding areas.
  • In trials, tirzepatide also led to reductions in sleep apnea-related hypoxic burden, body weight, systolic blood pressure, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein.
