Topiramate for treating sudden mood episodes in adults with bipolar disorder

Updated

Abstract

A total of 1638 participants were included in the review of topiramate's effects on bipolar disorder.

  • Topiramate showed no significant difference in efficacy compared to placebo as monotherapy after 3 weeks and 12 weeks.
  • Evidence indicated that lithium is more effective than topiramate for treating manic and mixed episodes.
  • No significant differences in troublesome side effects were found between topiramate and placebo or alternative medications.
  • The quality of evidence for most outcomes was rated as low or very low, limiting the ability to draw firm conclusions.
