Link Between Toxoplasma Infection and Thinking Skills in Healthy People

Updated

Abstract

A total of 13,289 healthy participants were analyzed for cognitive function in relation to Toxoplasma gondii seropositivity.

  • Participants without T gondii seropositivity showed better performance in processing speed, working memory, short-term verbal memory, and executive functioning.
  • Processing speed had a standardized mean difference of 0.12, working memory 0.16, short-term verbal memory 0.18, and executive functioning 0.15.
  • Older age was significantly associated with executive functioning, indicating that cognitive decline may be influenced by age.
  • The findings suggest a potential link between T gondii seropositivity and mild cognitive impairment across multiple cognitive domains.
  • Effect sizes observed in the study were small, indicating that while there may be an association, it could have limited individual impact.
