Vagus Nerve Stimulation Through the Ear to Reduce Fatigue in Long COVID Patients: Results from a Controlled Pilot Trial

Abstract

Forty-five patients with long COVID-related fatigue participated in a study evaluating transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) for 4 weeks.

  • Fatigue was reported in 6-7% of patients following COVID-19 infection, with its underlying causes still unclear.
  • Mean daily stimulation time for taVNS was 236 minutes, with over 80% of participants meeting the adherence criterion.
  • Improvements in fatigue severity and quality of life were observed over time, but no statistically significant differences were found between active and sham stimulation groups.
  • Mild adverse events included skin irritation and vertigo, occurring in 6.7% of participants.
  • Baseline fatigue and quality of life scores were significantly lower than normative data, indicating substantial impairment.
