Stages of changing diet and exercise habits in weight loss for overweight and obese adults

Updated

Abstract

A total of 2,971 participants were allocated to intervention and control groups across three trials assessing weight loss interventions.

  • The combination of the transtheoretical model stages of change (TTM SOC) with dietary or physical activity interventions produced inconclusive evidence for sustained weight loss.
  • Mean weight loss differences between intervention and control groups ranged from 2.1 kg to 0.2 kg at 24 months.
  • Improvements in physical activity and dietary habits were observed, including increased exercise duration and frequency, reduced dietary fat intake, and increased fruit and vegetable consumption.
  • Weight gain was reported as an adverse event in one trial.
  • The limited number of studies and their variable quality reduce the applicability of these findings to clinical practice.
