Triple Chronotherapy may act quickly as an additional treatment for unipolar and bipolar depression in real-world hospital settings.

Abstract

Essence

An open-label randomized trial suggests add-on triple chronotherapy can speed short-term improvement in unipolar and bipolar depressive episodes during inpatient care.

Evidence

This real-world open-label randomized controlled trial compared triple chronotherapy with treatment as usual in 24 versus 20 hospitalized patients and found larger reductions in Hamilton depression scores by day 5 that persisted through day 12 and discharge, along with greater drops in suicidality.

Caveat

The trial was small and open-label, and although hospital stay was shorter, readmission rates did not differ significantly over the following three months.
