TUDCA may improve memory problems in Alzheimer's mice by affecting the gut-brain connection

Abstract

TUDCA significantly improved cognitive impairments in APP/PS1 mice.

  • Cognitive deficits associated with Alzheimer's disease were notably reduced with TUDCA treatment.
  • TUDCA decreased amyloid-β accumulation in the brains of treated mice.
  • Inflammatory responses in both the central nervous system and peripheral tissues were suppressed by TUDCA.
  • Intestinal barrier function was enhanced, and gut microbiota composition shifted towards less pro-inflammatory profiles.
  • Fecal microbiota transplantation indicated that TUDCA's effects on learning and memory in AD mice were partially due to changes in gut microbiota.
  • TUDCA also inhibited the activation of the TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 pathway, suggesting additional mechanisms of action.
