Comparing Two Definitions of Metabolic Syndrome in Turkish Adults
Updated
Abstract
The age- and sex-adjusted prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 25% according to TCRP guidelines and 40% per NCEP criteria in a study of 1,690 Turkish adults.
- The Turkish Cardiovascular Risk Platform identifies metabolic syndrome based on specific criteria, including insulin resistance and other related factors.
- Individuals classified as having metabolic syndrome by NCEP but not by TCRP exhibited lower body mass index and less insulin resistance.
- Both groups with metabolic syndrome, regardless of the definition used, displayed similar adverse cardiovascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure and elevated triglycerides.
- The findings suggest that reliance on homeostasis model assessment for diagnosing metabolic syndrome may not be suitable for all ethnic groups.
