Abstract

Expression of Twist2 was significantly upregulated in renal tissues of mice with ischemia/reperfusion injury.

  • Knockdown of Twist2 reduced renal damage in mice with ischemia/reperfusion injury.
  • Twist2 depletion improved mitochondrial function, evidenced by increased ATP levels and mitochondrial DNA content.
  • Interference with Twist2 increased the expression of autophagy-related protein LC3B and decreased p62 levels.
  • Electron microscopy indicated the activation of autophagy and mitophagy following Twist2 knockdown.
  • Twist2 was found to inhibit the activity of BCL2 interacting protein 3 (Bnip3) by targeting its promoter.
