Eating ultra-processed foods linked to higher risk of metabolic syndrome in Korean adults

Updated

Abstract

The median usual percent total food intake from ultra-processed foods (UPFs) was 22% among 22,688 Korean adults.

  • Higher consumption of UPFs is associated with a 19% increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome compared to lower consumption levels.
  • Increased UPF intake is linked to a higher risk for hypertension, with an odds ratio of 1.13.
  • There is a notable association between higher UPF consumption and abdominal obesity, evidenced by an odds ratio of 1.19.
  • No significant associations were found between UPF intake and other components of metabolic syndrome, such as hyperglycemia or low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol.
