Combined Ulvan, Chitosan, and PVA Nanofibers to Improve Wound Healing

Abstract

The novel composite nanofibrous dressing achieved a wound closure rate of 93.29% ± 2.29% in an in vivo rat model.

  • The dressing is made from chitosan, ulvan, and polyvinyl alcohol, ensuring biodegradability.
  • Mechanical testing showed the dressing has a strength of up to 5.51 ± 0.012 MPa.
  • Water retention capacity was measured at 1059.05 ± 10.5 g/m/24 h, indicating good moisture management.
  • High porosity of 92.49% ± 4.6% supports gas exchange and nutrient diffusion.
  • In vitro studies indicated steady cell proliferation and promising blood-clotting ability.
  • Histological analysis confirmed the presence of new skin formation associated with the dressing.
