Sea urchin feeding on young kelp plants in warming oceans

Abstract

Grazing by juvenile sea urchins can reduce the abundance of kelp gametophytes, leading to poor recovery in warmer temperatures.

  • Both juvenile sea urchin species grazed on kelp gametophytes, resulting in a decrease in their abundance compared to control groups without grazing.
  • Temperature did not affect the grazing rates of the sea urchins on the gametophytes.
  • Gametes did not recover from grazing when exposed to elevated ocean temperatures (26°C).
  • Kelp gametophytes survived being eaten by juvenile sea urchins and were able to form sporophytes after being ingested by one species, Tripneustes gratilla, but not by Centrostephanus rodgersii.
  • These interactions indicate that both negative and positive effects of juvenile grazers on kelp recruitment may exist.
