Levels of a Melatonin Breakdown Product in Urine Linked to Sleep Quality in Older Men

Updated

Abstract

In a study of 2,821 older men, lower melatonin levels were linked to increased daytime sleepiness and reduced sleep efficiency.

  • Higher levels of melatonin's major urinary metabolite, 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (aMT6s), were associated with lower scores of daytime sleepiness.
  • Men without β-blocker use showed that lower aMT6s levels were linked to shorter sleep duration of less than 5 hours.
  • In the same group, lower aMT6s levels correlated with worse sleep efficiency, defined as less than 70%.
  • No significant association was found between aMT6s levels and subjective sleep quality or respiratory disturbances.
