Urinary Stone Return After Starting GLP-1 Therapy: A Romanian Study of Health, Kidney, and Hydration Factors

Updated

Abstract

10.3% of patients experienced clinically and radiologically confirmed urinary stone recurrence after initiating GLP-1-based therapy.

  • The cohort comprised 126 participants, with 94 receiving semaglutide and 32 receiving tirzepatide.
  • Follow-up duration averaged 9 months, with the range between 8 to 12 months.
  • Recurrence rates did not vary significantly based on demographic, metabolic, renal, hydration-related, electrolyte, or treatment characteristics.
  • Increased use of allopurinol was observed among those with stone recurrence, but this finding is considered exploratory and may be confounded.
  • The study highlights recurrent stone episodes but does not establish a clear causal link to the GLP-1-based therapies due to study limitations.
