Usability testing methods used to develop eHealth applications: An overview

Updated

Abstract

Over 325,000 health apps are currently available on major app stores.

  • A scoping review identified 133 articles focused on usability testing of eHealth applications published between April 2014 and October 2017.
  • The most common methods used for usability testing included questionnaires (105), task completion (57), and 'Think-Aloud' protocols (45).
  • Most studies employed one (45) or two (46) methods, with few using three (30) or four (12) methods for testing usability.
  • The System Usability Scale (SUS) was the most frequently used questionnaire, appearing in 44 studies.
  • The 'Think-Aloud' method and heuristic testing were significantly associated with further iterations of the app being developed.
  • Despite the increase in eHealth apps, the publication rate of usability testing results has not kept pace, with many apps lacking detailed usability evaluations.
