USP11 controls cell self-digestion linked to iron-dependent cell death after spinal cord blood flow injury by modifying Beclin 1

Updated

Abstract

Inhibition of ferroptosis could promote the recovery of motor function in mice after spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury.

  • Ferroptosis is involved in the pathological mechanism of spinal cord ischemia-reperfusion injury (SCIRI).
  • Ubiquitin-specific protease 11 (USP11) is significantly upregulated in neuronal cells following hypoxia-reoxygenation and in the spinal cord after injury.
  • Knockdown of USP11 reduces neuronal cell ferroptosis and promotes functional recovery in mice after SCIRI.
  • Overexpression of USP11 leads to increased ferroptosis and poorer functional recovery in mice after SCIRI.
  • USP11 may enhance ferroptosis by promoting autophagy activation through stabilization of Beclin 1.
