Abstract

Early-life disruptions in gut microbiota composition are associated with an increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

  • The microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA) integrates gut health and brain function through immune modulation and neural communication.
  • Dysbiosis, or imbalances in gut microbiota, may influence brain maturation and lead to NDDs.
  • Environmental factors, including antibiotic use and dietary patterns, can disrupt gut microbiota composition in early life.
  • Current therapeutic strategies, like probiotics and fecal microbiota transplantation, have shown inconsistent results in restoring microbiota balance.
  • Non-invasive Vagus Nerve Stimulation (nVNS) may offer a method to influence microbiota health and improve neurodevelopmental outcomes.
