The many roles of the vagus nerve
Updated
Abstract
Cholecystokinin (CCK) regulates the expression of receptors in vagal afferent neurons that influence food intake.
- Vagal afferent neurons are involved in transmitting gut signals related to food intake to the brain.
- CCK stimulates vagal afferent neurons while also modulating their expression of receptors and neurotransmitters.
- Low plasma CCK levels during fasting increase the expression of cannabinoid and melanin concentrating hormone receptors.
- Feeding leads to a quick decrease in cannabinoid and melanin concentrating hormone receptor expression and an increase in Y2 receptor expression.
- In fasting, there is heightened expression of the appetite-stimulating neuropeptide MCH and reduced expression of the satiety peptide CART.
- Ghrelin, an orexigenic hormone, appears to block some actions of CCK by preventing certain proteins from entering the nucleus.
