No change in the number of VIP-producing neurons in the brain's internal clock of homosexual men compared to vasopressin-producing neurons

Abstract

Homosexual men have more than twice as many vasopressin neurons in the suprachiasmatic nucleus compared to heterosexual men.

  • No difference was observed in the number of neurons expressing vasoactive intestinal polypeptide between homosexual and heterosexual men.
  • The nuclear diameter of both vasoactive intestinal polypeptide and vasopressin neurons is reduced in homosexual men.
  • These observations suggest possible metabolic alterations in the suprachiasmatic nucleus related to sexual orientation.
