Weight Loss Amount, Fat Loss, and Muscle Loss Measured by Device During Obesity Treatment

Updated

Abstract

The median observed weight loss in a cohort of 59 adults undergoing obesity pharmacotherapy was 12.11%.

  • Median fat mass and device-estimated muscle mass losses were 9.9 kg and 2.3 kg, respectively.
  • Among participants who lost at least 5% of their weight, fat loss constituted 73.95% of total mass lost.
  • Each additional five percentage points of weight loss was linked to a 2.47 percentage points increase in relative muscle mass loss.
  • Muscle-share estimates varied and were influenced by the models used in the analysis.
  • The study does not confirm causal relationships between medication and observed changes in body composition.
