How different doses of the original vaccine affect immunity to BA.5, illness severity, and risk of XBB reinfection

Abstract

Vaccination with two to three doses of the wild-type SARS-CoV-2 vaccine significantly increased neutralizing antibody levels and reduced pneumonia risk during BA.5 infection.

  • Individuals with two to three vaccine doses had higher levels of against both wild-type and BA.5 strains compared to those with zero to one dose.
  • The incidence of COVID-19-associated pneumonia was reduced in those who received two to three doses during BA.5 infection.
